Reflections on my Graduation Final Capstone Project on AI, Deepfakes, and Disinformation

My final research project was on misuse of AI tools and Deepfakes. My findings were sobering.

What I Learned:

Globally, there are not enough regulations on the AI industry.

Laws are slow to change, and this is a HUGE and new issue.

AI ChatBots are not legally required to give accurate, truthful, or non-harmful information.

AI tools can reproduce anyone’s image or voice, with as little as one photograph or a few second voice clip uploaded anywhere online.

Current laws around the world are a patchwork and they’re not proactive enough for the new threat trends.

Deepfakes are a serious new issue. Most are used for violence against women and children, which was the focus of my paper, but it has a potential to impact your ability to get and find work safely.

Scammers can do a lot by duplicating you or someone from the company you are applying to.

The possibilities are endless, but I am most concerned about new methods of identity theft and even extortion.

Companies are not stepping up to self-regulate.

There are tons of government hearings and even investigations happening around the world because of the issues these AI tools are causing, but companies like OpenAI and Grok are pushing back or choosing to not take enough action.

For example, X’s Grok (which was producing almost 50 deepfake nudes of real women and children EVERY FIFTEEN SECONDS as of this year) just put the tool behind a paywall for a measly 2 cents per image.

Copies of the tool, as well as dozens others capable of being misused for deepfakes, are still available and being used at an industrial scale.

This is an extremely high-risk period for workers.

I have helped many a client screen attempted phishing (fake email) and fake job listing schemes.

Before starting the Beat the Bots Resume, I did cyber security. I can say with high confidence that bad actors will likely learn to use video and audio deepfakes of job seekers or recruiters to steal information and get access to your money and lines of credit.

Be extremely vigilant about sending your I9 documents (passport, social security card, drivers license) over the internet. Seeing a recruiter or HR person on a Zoom call may not be enough, because convincing Deepfakes can be generated in real time already.

If you can, provide your I9 documents in person.

Apply directly on company websites whenever possible.

Contact the HR person directly from the company website if you have any concerns about a job listing. I have done this on behalf of clients before, and we discovered they almost applied to fake listings! Now imagine that they had spoken to or even seen the “HR Person” virtually and how convincing that scam would seem!

Stay informed and manage your own risk.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like our Deepfake woes are going to be solved by government regulation any time soon.

If you have a question, check trusted sources from .edu, .gov, and news sites such as BBC and AP News. If you’re more technical, sites like KrebsonSecurity and CISA.gov post advisories on new trends.

Never ask an AI ChatBot for cyber security advice! Read up-to-date recommendations from real human experts.
